Netflix’s animated Twilight project Midnight Sun has started casting for Jacob Black and Billy Black, a sign that the series is moving from long-running development into actual production. The call is looking for a Native American male actor to voice Jacob as a recurring character, with the role described as that of a young teen played by an adult performer.
That is the first concrete update fans have had to track since the project was announced nearly two years ago, and it is the reason Twilight is back in search results now. Taylor Lautner once played Jacob in the films, while Gil Birmingham portrayed Billy Black, Jacob’s wheelchair-bound father, and the new series is now trying to fill both roles in animation rather than on a live-action set.
Midnight Sun is an animated adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s companion novel, which retells Twilight from Edward Cullen’s perspective. Meyer is executive producing the series, with Sinead Daly as showrunner and Lynn Wang as supervising director. Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Erik Feig, Meghan Hibbett and Emily Wissink are among the producers and executive producers attached to the project.
The casting push also exposes the part of the production that is still unfinished. Jacob and Billy are being sought now, but the main characters have not yet been cast, and that leaves the series without the voices at its center even as it begins to assemble its supporting world. For a franchise that has been quiet for years, that is progress — but it is not a finish line.
There is still no release date for Midnight Sun, and the project is unlikely to arrive before late 2027 at the earliest. For now, the update tells viewers only this: Netflix is finally building the series one role at a time, and the next real question is who will speak for Jacob and Billy when Twilight returns.
