Dutton Ranch has been renewed for a second season and will move ahead under a new showrunner, with Benjamin Cavell replacing Chad Feehan before the first season finale even landed. The change puts the Yellowstone spinoff on a new creative track after a debut run that ended with Beth Dutton, Rip Wheeler and Carter caught in a brutal cliffhanger.
The reason the show is drawing fresh attention now is simple: the first season finale, titled El Padrino, left the story in free fall. Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler learned Beulah had conned them into doing business with the cartel, a deadly shootout broke out, Rob-Will died, and Carter was hauled off in a van after being abducted by the family Beulah had scorned. For viewers who finished that episode wondering whether the series would come back at all, the answer is already yes.
The renewal also gives the production a rare kind of momentum. Dutton Ranch became the biggest original series debut in Paramount+ history, which helps explain why the network moved quickly to lock in another season. Production on season two is slated to begin early 2027, leaving the show with time to reset after a first run that was built around escalation, betrayal and loss.
That reset comes with a creative wrinkle. Taylor Sheridan remains an executive producer, but Kelly Reilly said this was the first time she and Cole Hauser had to figure out how to make the show without his words for Beth Dutton. Reilly said she was very uncertain about what the series would be without Sheridan’s writing and that it felt like a part of the character had to die before she could begin Beth again. She said they now talk with Sheridan about what the next season could be, and that he wants to be involved.
Hauser echoed the grind behind the show’s first season, saying it was not easy, that the cast and crew put their hearts and souls into it, and that the shoot ran long and swung from hot to cold. He said what he loves most is when the audience speaks. The next chapter for Dutton Ranch is already set in motion; the open question is how much of Beth and Rip’s world changes now that the series is moving forward with a different voice at the top.
