Cristian Romero could still leave Tottenham this summer, and Fabrizio Romano says the move remains a serious possibility because the club are not playing European football this season. The 28-year-old, who signed a contract extension until 2029 last August, is now being linked with a switch to LaLiga.
That is why the Argentina defender is back in focus today. Romano said Romero would really like a new experience in Spain, with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid named as possible destinations, and he added that the interest is not just speculative noise.
Barcelona have long admired Romero, while Atletico have held a standing interest in him. Romano said both clubs could be options, and the market may be narrowing to those two sides if Tottenham decide to move on from one of their most important defenders.
The timing is what makes the situation awkward for Tottenham. Romero only committed to the club last August, yet the season that followed brought two red cards and a knee injury in April that ended his campaign. Even so, the sense around him has not settled, and Romano said there are still strong chances of an exit this summer.
Tottenham’s stance is easier to understand from a squad point of view. The club have already signed several centre-backs, including Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52 million and Marcos Senesi on a free transfer, and Romano said they feel well covered in that area. That gives Tottenham room to consider a sale if the price is right.
That price has been floated before. Reports in March suggested Spurs would want around £50 million to £60 million for Romero, which would make any deal expensive even by the standards of a top defender in his late twenties. If Barcelona or Atletico Madrid make a move, they will have to decide whether that valuation matches their plans for LaLiga.
For now, the question is not whether Romero is admired. It is whether one of the Spanish clubs that want him can meet Tottenham’s number before the summer window closes. If that does not happen, Romero stays in north London; if it does, Spurs may be ready to cash in despite the contract they handed him only months ago.
