Conair has recalled about 12,660 Cuisinart Propel+ Four Burner 3-in-1 Gas Grills in the United States and about 83 more in Canada after reports that the tempered glass window in the pizza oven can shatter during use. Consumers who have one of the grills are being told to stop using it immediately.
The recall is drawing attention because the company says the hazard is a laceration risk, even though no injuries have been reported. At the same time, Conair said it has received 37 reports of shattered glass during use and one fire, a combination that turns a product complaint into a live safety problem.
The grills involved are the stainless-steel Cuisinart Propel+ Four Burner 3-in-1 Gas Grill, which includes a griddle, a stove top burner and a pizza oven with tempered glass on top of the lid. The model number CGG-6331 is printed on the label inside the right-hand metal door, along with the serial number, which is how owners can check whether their unit is included.
Conair LLC, of Stamford, Connecticut, says affected consumers should go to the company’s website, confirm the recall, remove the tempered glass window from the pizza oven and upload two photographs: one of the removed glass and one of the grill’s serial number. After verification, consumers will get a $500 refund by check or be reimbursed for the original purchase amount with proof of receipt.
The company says that after the refund is issued, consumers should write the word “Recall” on the tempered glass with a black sharpie marker and dispose of it. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said federal law bars the sale of products subject to a Commission ordered recall or a voluntary recall done in consultation with the CPSC.
