The Lockhill Postal Office on the North Side was back to normal Thursday after a woman drove her car into the building Wednesday morning, leaving damage inside the lobby area and forcing a brief service disruption.
The timing mattered because customers who rely on the location had to adjust immediately. Officers were dispatched for a reported collision just before 11 a.m. Wednesday at the post office in the 12900 block of Huebner Road, and the office reopened the next day after repairs and cleanup allowed business to resume.
Becky Hernandez said the crash damaged the front door, the retail lobby and the P.O. box lobby. She also said no injuries were reported. Those details match the kind of disruption that can turn a routine postal stop into a temporary detour, especially at a neighborhood site where people come in for both mail access and retail service.
There was, however, a sharp difference in how the incident was described after it happened. SAPD said officers found an older woman who had inadvertently driven into the post office, that she was treated for her injuries and later taken to a hospital, and that she may have suffered a health episode during the crash. The woman's condition was not known after she left for the hospital, and the cause of the crash has not been publicly explained beyond that possible episode.
For customers caught by the shutdown, the fix was straightforward. Retail services were shifted to the Cedar Elm Post Office at 5837 De Zavala Road, where service was available from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday while the Lockhill location was restored. By Thursday, the damaged North Side office was operating again, but the crash had already left its mark in the front door, the retail lobby and the P.O. box lobby.
What remains unanswered is the piece that matters most to the driver and to anyone trying to understand the crash: whether the apparent health issue was the reason she ended up in the building in the first place. Until that is clarified, Thursday's reopening closes the disruption, not the question behind it.
