Stranger Things earned seven Emmy nominations for its fifth and final season on Wednesday morning, but none of them were for acting, writing, directing or Best Drama Series. The show’s last run was recognized only in below-the-line categories, a sharp turn for a series that had been a regular contender in the top races.
The search now is for what happened to the Stranger Things cast, especially Millie Bobby Brown, whose work on the series had twice landed her in supporting actress contention. David Harbour was also a two-time supporting nominee, while Shannon Purser drew a guest bid for Season 1. Netflix had campaigned 12 performers for the final season, all in supporting categories, and still came away with no acting nominations at all.
That makes the result more striking against the show’s Emmy history. The first four seasons all earned Best Drama Series bids, and Seasons 1 and 2 were also recognized for writing and directing. This time, the final season missed all three of those lanes. The nominations that did arrive were limited to craft work such as production design, makeup, music supervision, sound editing and sound mixing.
That is not a total collapse, but it is a narrowing. Stranger Things has now won 12 Emmy Awards overall, and every one of them has come in craft races. The final season added to that record, but it did not expand it into the categories that usually define a prestige series’ finish.
The friction is hard to ignore. A campaign built around 12 performers, including Brown and Harbour, met a voting body that left the entire cast out of the acting field. The final episode, titled The Rightside Up, closed the series on New Year, but the Emmy response suggests the show’s strongest awards footing still lives behind the camera rather than in front of it.
For Stranger Things, the question left by Wednesday’s vote is not whether it remains an awards player. It clearly does. The real question is whether its final season can turn a craft-heavy showing into a win total that matches the show’s place in TV history when the 2026 Emmys are handed out.
