Varvara 'Bobby' Diakonenkova of West Philly is heading onto Project Runway 2026 as one of 22 contestants, and her debut comes Thursday in the season premiere. The 23-year-old designer will enter a competition that is bigger than any the show has staged before, with the largest cast in its history.
That matters now because Project Runway is entering its 22nd year on the air, and the new season pairs scale with a fresh batch of designers trying to break through. Heidi Klum, Law Roach, Nina Garcia and Christian Siriano are all back, giving the premiere a familiar frame even as the cast expands.
Diakonenkova has lived in West Philly since moving from Moscow in 2021 to study fashion design at Drexel, and she said she has been drawing and designing garments since she learned how to hold a pencil. Her work has already leaned into material she cares about, including domestic violence awareness, oppressive governance in Russia and the American Dream, which she said is part of why the process has pushed her creatively and emotionally more than she expected.
The part that makes her casting stand out is the one she does not hide: she absolutely hates sewing. She said she has no patience for it and described herself as the kind of person who spirals hard when something goes wrong at the machine, even joking that she would feel like imaginary red crosses were over her head. That is not a small flaw on a fashion competition built around making garments; it is the obstacle she will have to live with from the first challenge on.
She said the application itself began as a joke while she was talking with friends, but it turned serious fast. After staying up until about 2 a.m. and recording what she described as a funny casting video with dumb iMovie music in the background, she got a call the next morning. On Thursday, the show will find out whether the designer who dislikes sewing can still turn that joke into a run worth watching.
