Phoenix is set for another punishing day of heat on Thursday, with temperatures near 114 degrees after the city reached 113 on Wednesday. The broader Phoenix-metro area remains under extreme heat, and warnings continue for southern Arizona through Thursday evening.
That is why the weather forecast is drawing so much attention now. People in Phoenix are not looking for a stormy turnaround yet; they are looking for relief, and the first real shift comes only gradually, with Thursday starting dry and sunny before showers and thunderstorms build over the mountains of eastern Arizona later in the afternoon and evening. The White Mountains are expected to see the heaviest storm activity, while eastern Arizona continues to see more showers and thunderstorms through the evening before activity ends overnight.
The numbers show how limited the immediate rain threat remains in the Valley. Phoenix rain chances are only 10% Saturday night, then 20% Sunday and 20% to 30% next Monday. That means the weekend change is more about moisture arriving than widespread rain arriving all at once. Rain chances are expected to increase across southern Arizona, including the Valley, and the mountains of central, northern and eastern Arizona as monsoon moisture starts moving into the state on Saturday and Sunday.
There is still a catch. Storms in the Mazatzal and Superstition Mountains are sending outflow boundaries westward toward the east Valley and Pinal County, which can bring gusty winds up to 35 mph, blowing dust and an isolated shower there until around 9 p.m. In other words, nearby storm activity is already affecting the region, but it is doing so through wind and dust more than through useful rain in Phoenix itself. Wildfire haze is also expected to be more noticeable in Valley skies through the weekend, adding one more layer to a forecast that is still dominated by heat.
Friday should be even drier, so the practical answer for the Valley is that any cooling will wait for the weekend moisture surge, not Thursday or Friday. Phoenix is not in line for a soaking; it is in line for a slow increase in rain odds, with the first meaningful changes arriving Saturday night and building into Sunday and next Monday.
