Chris Evans set off one of the most quoted Marvel cast stories with a single word: “Assemble.” Clark Gregg said that was the favorite text he may have ever gotten, recalling a night in Albuquerque, New Mexico when Evans pulled together Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and others while the group was shooting one of the Marvel films.
The recollection came back into view at New York Comic Con, where Gregg described the message as the start of a night that has taken on a life of its own among Marvel fans. He said, “My favorite text I may have ever gotten in my life was from Chris Evans and it just said, ‘Assemble.’ Albuquerque may never recover from that evening.”
The value of the story is in how little it sounds like a polished reunion and how much it sounds like a late-night call that actually worked. Hiddleston said there was dancing, then added that the only two people in the club who were not dancing were Evans and Hemsworth. He also remembered hearing Evans ask Hemsworth how he got his physique for playing Thor, only for Hemsworth to answer, “I don’t know, mate. Like, just work out and stuff.”
Johansson was there too, and Gregg said she was breaking down moves in the VIP booth while a birthday crowd watched from close range. He said a birthday boy reacted so strongly to the dancing that the moment became its own joke, capped by Gregg’s line that he “wasn’t Ruffalo’d, but he was Romanoff’d.” The cast laughed through the retelling, but also made clear that some parts of the night should not be described too openly, even while they were still talking about them on stage.
What remains is a familiar kind of Marvel legend: not a studio announcement, not a teaser, but a private evening that turned into public mythology because the people in it kept telling the story. The unanswered part is the one they would not spell out, and that silence is what makes the rest of it stick.
