Wes Watson pleaded guilty on Thursday in Miami-Dade County court to aggravated battery, ending the immediate fight over a Dec. 29, 2024, gym confrontation and moving the case to sentencing on July 17. Prosecutors recommended 21 months in prison, with credit for time already served, followed by seven years of probation and court-ordered mental health treatment.
The plea matters because it puts a date on the next step in a case that has followed Watson for months. He is 42, and the Miami-Dade matter is separate from the felony cases he still faces in Broward County.
Watson was charged after the altercation at Elevation Fitness in Miami-Dade County. An arrest affidavit said he told responding officers he was working out when the other man approached him and said he wanted to fight. Investigators said surveillance footage showed Watson striking the man with a weightlifting belt during the confrontation.
His attorney, Eric Clayman, has pushed a different account, saying the alleged victim came after Watson because of his online notoriety. Clayman said the man bought a plane ticket, came through New Jersey and showed up at the gym for the sole purpose of confronting Watson. He also said there has been a lot argued in the case about stand your ground, putting the focus on why the encounter escalated so quickly.
That clash matters because it frames the guilty plea without resolving every issue around the confrontation. The record now points in one direction on the criminal charge, but the sentence is still to come, and the court will decide whether to follow the prosecutors’ recommendation or impose something different.
Watson’s broader legal exposure remains far from over. Prosecutors in Broward County have charged him with felony battery, aggravated assault, witness tampering and charges tied to an alleged domestic violence incident involving his girlfriend, keeping him under pressure even as the Miami-Dade case moves toward July 17.
