For a performer who already won an Emmy in 2018 for Philip Jennings in The Americans, the new recognition adds another sharp turn to a career that has already crossed drama, suspense and comedy.
The two nominations also map neatly onto the range that has kept Rhys in awards conversations for years. He is up for lead actor in a comedy series for Widow’s Bay, where Tom Loftis is a single dad and the mayor of a cursed New England island, and for lead actor in a limited or anthology series for The Beast in Me, where Nile Jarvis is a real estate developer who once was the prime suspect in the killing of his wife. In one role he is carrying a weird, wry island story; in the other, he is inside a cat-and-mouse setup with Claire Danes.
What makes the Widow’s Bay nomination stand out is how close the series came to being a question mark. It arrived in April, and only its first seven episodes qualified for the 2026 awards cycle because it came in late in the season. Even so, the show built word-of-mouth week by week and ended last month with enough momentum to land in the Emmy field, despite nervousness about whether viewers would embrace it at all.
Rhys is now at seven total Emmy nominations, counting the five he had before this year. Those earlier mentions included lead-actor nods for The Americans and Perry Mason, plus a guest-actor nomination for Girls. The larger picture this year is that he is not just back in the race; he is competing twice, and Keri Russell is in the mix too with her lead-actress nomination for The Diplomat. Rhys called getting the text from Gary Oldman the real pinch-me moment, saying it hit him emotionally because his younger self would never have believed it.
