Donald Trump said the new Trump Air Force One will not carry him home from Turkey. Instead, he said, the aircraft is being sent to the United Kingdom, while he returns by normal methods after leaving the NATO summit in Ankara.
Trump said the plane will stop at two or three bases in Europe so soldiers can see it, calling it a way to honor U.S. troops. He said the former Air Force One will take him from Turkey to Mildenhall Air Force Base in the United Kingdom, a short trip he said was worth making so military personnel could tour the new aircraft.
The shift matters because the plane was gifted to Trump by Qatar and is being used for something far removed from a presidential flight home. Instead of carrying the president, it is being routed through Europe for a series of military viewings, with Mildenhall named as the first stop Trump wanted to highlight.
Trump drew a sharper line around the change when he said it was not driven by security concerns, even as he said his own life is dangerous and that he is No. 1 on the kill list for Iran. He said the threat is real, but he still framed the aircraft decision as a tribute to service members rather than a protective move.
That leaves the practical question: how long the plane will remain in the United Kingdom and which other bases in Europe will receive it. Trump only said there would be a couple of stops before the aircraft returns to normal use, leaving the route and timing broader than the gesture itself.
