Earthquake In Chicago: 2.9 quake recorded in Lake Michigan near Kenilworth

A 2.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Lake Michigan on Wednesday afternoon, about 12.5 miles east-northeast of Kenilworth, Illinois, and it was felt from several north suburbs to Chicago's South Side. No damage had been reported immediately after the quake.

The tremor was logged at about 2:38 p.m. July 8, 2026, at a depth of about 5 kilometers, giving people on shore a chance to notice it while leaving anyone boating on the lake with little reason to realize anything had happened. Dr. Suzan Van Der Lee said shoreline residents likely could have felt the earthquake, but people out on the water probably would have had no idea.

That reach is what made the earthquake in Chicago area waters stand out. USGS said reports came from Evanston, Deerfield, Kenilworth, Waukegan and Chicago's South Side, even though Van Der Lee said the Chicago area is not in an active earthquake zone or on active fault lines. She said earthquakes do happen in the middle of tectonic plates, but far less often, and if there are fault lines under Lake Michigan, they are hundreds of millions, if not billions, of years old.

The other reason the event drew attention is how uncommon it appears to be. Preliminary National Weather Service data showed another 2.9 magnitude earthquake was reported on Aug. 2, 2024, and USGS data suggest the July 8 quake may be one of only two reported in Lake Michigan in the last 100 years. That does not make the event bigger than it was, but it does make it unusual enough to be noticed.

There was also a limit to what this quake could do. Van Der Lee said aftershocks are possible, but they are unlikely to be felt because they will be much softer than the original event, and she said tsunami watches or warnings are not a concern for people along the lakefront. She added that there are enough waves in the water already that extra seismic waves would not make much of a difference, though it is possible there were changes of a centimeter or millimeter along the lakebed, which is what would be required for a tsunami.

For now, the practical answer is simple: the quake was real, it was wide enough to be felt across the region, and it did not immediately leave behind damage or an obvious next act. If anything follows, it is more likely to be another small tremor than a felt aftershock, because this was a shallow but modest event in a place where quakes this large are rare.
