Savannah Guthrie changed outfits in the middle of Tuesday’s July 7 episode of Today, switching from blue to a vibrant yellow gingham dress after she realized her co-hosts had shown up in yellow. The move happened live, during a PopStart segment, and turned a routine morning-show moment into the kind of on-air scramble viewers remember.
Guthrie, 54, was the only one in blue when Jenna Bush Hager, Dylan Dreyer and Sheinelle Jones were already in yellow, while Craig Melvin tied the look together with a yellow-and-blue striped tie. “You guys, did you really have a memo? I’m changing!” Guthrie said as the mismatch became impossible to ignore.
That is what made the switch land: it was not a costume change staged for a tease, but something Guthrie did during the break so she could come back with the group. Bush Hager said she had texted Guthrie, but the message did not get through. When the show returned, Guthrie came back in the new dress and said, “I did, girls! I wanted to be with my ladies,” while Dreyer said she was thrilled she found the gown.
The moment worked because it was simple and visible. Everyone on set could see the color divide, and Guthrie made the fix before the segment moved on. Melvin praised her for changing “that fast!” and Bush Hager pushed the joke one step further, suggesting that Tuesdays will be yellow. Guthrie answered, “We’re starting it today!”
There was also a second current running under the lightness. Guthrie’s cast has long supported her as her mother, Nancy Guthrie, remains missing after being last seen on Jan. 30 near Tucson, Arizona. The Pima County Sheriff's Department and the FBI continue to investigate the case, and on June 7 Guthrie posted on her Instagram story, “Oh my, my soul it cries out, soul, it cries out” and “Bring her home,” along with a heart emoji.
So the yellow dress was more than a wardrobe joke. It was a live, unscripted show of the way the Today team has surrounded Guthrie, and on July 7 she made sure she was part of the same picture before the hour moved on.
