Charlie Hall has joined season 4 of The White Lotus, and the news came with a family reaction that sounds written for television. Hall said he called his mother, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, first after getting the role, and heard her immediately shout to Brad Hall that he had landed it.
That kind of call matters because this is not a small casting note. Hall is 29, the new season is already in production in France, and Mike White is once again writing and directing the HBO series as it moves toward a story set during the week of the Cannes Film Festival.
Hall said his mother was trying to keep calm because he was pretty calm, but the excitement came through anyway. He said his parents were “insanely stoked” because The White Lotus is one of their favorite shows, a reaction that also places Julia Louis-Dreyfus alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger as a famous White Lotus parent watching a child step into the franchise.
The cast list around Hall helps explain why the role is drawing attention. This season also includes Vincent Cassel, Chris Messina, Steve Coogan, Heather Graham and Rosie Perez, adding another layer of star power to a show that has made its ensemble one of its main attractions. Hall did not disclose what character he will play, which keeps the new arrival more intriguing than complete.
There is also a small contradiction in Hall’s own take on the season. He said he knows he is biased, but thinks it could be really the best one yet, then described it as very classic White Lotus: funny, real and, in his words, “kind of more of the same, in the best way possible, with some twists and turns along the way.” That is probably the best shorthand for why the casting lands now. The series is betting that familiarity is the point, even as it keeps introducing new faces, new settings and a new group of guests and employees.
Hall is not arriving at the show as an unknown. He made his acting debut in an episode of Veep, later appeared on Love, Victor, The Sex Lives of College Girls, Bel-Air and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, and is currently starring opposite Tatiana Maslany as a series regular on Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed. The White Lotus gives him the biggest spotlight yet, even if the production is still holding back the one detail viewers want most: who he is playing.
