Jennifer Beals is joining CBS’ NCIS: New York as Assistant Special Agent in Charge Robyn Wells, putting her opposite LL Cool J and Scott Caan in the network’s latest NCIS offshoot. The casting gives the series a new female lead and adds another recognizable name to a franchise that is moving into CBS’ NCIS-branded Tuesday lineup this fall.
Beals will play the director of the NCIS New York field office, a boss who leads with intuition and is widely respected by her team. That makes her character more than another badge on the wall; she is meant to anchor the room when the casework starts moving fast. The show is also set to stream next day on Paramount+, giving CBS a broadcast launch and a quick digital follow-up in the same week.
The timing matters because the series is not arriving in isolation. It is being positioned as CBS’ latest installment in a hit crime drama franchise, and the network is building around a familiar structure: LL Cool J returns as NCIS Special Agent Sam Hanna, this time back in New York City and working out of the NCIS field office with Nick Schaeffer. In other words, the new show keeps one foot in continuity even as it shifts the setting to a new team.
That is also where the friction sits. LL Cool J is reprising his NCIS: Los Angeles role, but the story now centers on New York, where Sam Hanna partners with Nick Schaeffer and joins a fresh lineup of agents. Jacqueline Byers has been cast as NCIS Special Agent Addison “Addy” Ross, Shane Harper as NCIS Special Agent Wyatt Hill and Devin Druid as NCIS Tech Specialist Sean Sullivan, giving Beals three new series regulars around her and leaving the show to prove how the new field office works once the cases start coming in.
Beals arrives with her own television history already built in. She has appeared in The L Word, Luckiest Girl Alive, Devil in a Blue Dress and The Book of Boba Fett, and she is also recurring in the upcoming third season of Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The series is produced by CBS Studios and distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution, with Byron Balasco serving as showrunner and R. Scott Gemmill, Byron Balasco, Adam Davidson, Kyle Harimoto, Joe Wilson, LL Cool J and Jason Barrett among the executive producers. The question now is not whether CBS has assembled a cast. It is whether this New York team can make a familiar franchise feel like a new one from the first episode this fall.
