The timing made the point plain. Bruce Zimmermann had handled the bulk work in the first game, allowing three earned runs over five innings, and the Cardinals still moved on from him before the nightcap began. Hunter Dobbins started the second game, while the Brewers had already taken the opener 4-3, leaving the Cardinals to chase the rest of the day with a fresh arm in place.
Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reported that the Cardinals wanted extra rest for Michael McGreevy and Andre Pallante, which explains why the roster had to be reshaped between games. Zimmermann was added to the roster on the morning of July 7 and used as the bulk pitcher in the first half of the twin bill, but the club needed a pitcher it could keep moving through the rest of the day. That is the kind of problem a doubleheader creates: one arm can solve the first game and still be expendable before the second one starts.
Shuster’s path has been more familiar than stable. He signed a minor league deal with the Cards in the offseason, is 27 years old, and had already been added twice before July 7. In each of his first two big league stints, he made two appearances before being designated for assignment, then cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A. Around those moves, he had allowed two earned runs in 7 2/3 major league innings, while also posting an 8.78 ERA in 27 2/3 Triple-A innings in 2026.
Zimmermann’s exit was just as blunt. He is out of options, which limits the room for a long stay once the roster shuffle stops, even after a solid enough outing. Before the call-up, he had made 15 Triple-A starts, logged 78 2/3 innings and carried a 3.78 ERA there in 2026. The Cardinals planned to select Luis Gastelum this week, and that leaves Shuster in the same narrow lane that has already sent him back and forth twice this season. The next move may come fast enough to make this one feel temporary before the ink is dry.
