Adam Sandler spent part of his weekend on Nantucket the way few visitors would: by calling the Nantucket Police Department for directions to a basketball court, then showing up and jumping into a pickup game off Backus Lane.
The sighting drew attention because it came less than 48 hours after Sandler officiated the wedding of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden. On Nantucket, though, the moment was much smaller and more local — a celebrity asking where to hoop, then actually doing it.
Andrew Kesler said he and his friends were already playing when Sandler pulled up in a car, got out and asked to join. “Adam Sandler rolled in a car and started playing pick ups with the boys,” Kesler said. He added that Sandler told the group, “guys let me stretch I’m going to hop in,” before taking the court.
The call itself was just as direct. Chris Reynolds, a public safety dispatcher, said Sandler phoned the department’s non-emergency line and asked, “Hey, I’m here on your island and I like to play basketball. Can you tell me where there’s a basketball court I could play on?” Reynolds sent him to the court off Surfside Road, and Sandler ended up at the Backus Lane court.
Kesler said Sandler looked comfortable once the game started, with “great passing and playmaking,” decent layups and a reluctance to shoot. That fits the shape of the story on Nantucket: not a staged appearance, but a brief stop for basketball after a local phone call pointed him to the right court. What remains unanswered is the simplest question in the background — why he was on Nantucket in the first place.
