More than 400 people were arrested after a July 4 celebration on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach turned into a Newport Beach riot on Saturday evening, with fireworks, explosive mortars and other projectiles hurled at police officers and crowds. An unlawful assembly was declared around 8:30 p.m., and residents were told to shelter in place as the holiday gathering broke apart into fights and street chaos.
Police said 402 arrests were made between midnight July 3 and 6 a.m. July 5, a figure that shows how quickly the night ran away from the city’s control. A police officer struck by a mortar was treated at the scene, while police on horseback moved into the beach crowd to break up unruly revelers and a nearby Pavilions supermarket on West Balboa Boulevard was ransacked.
The scale of the response was unusually large. Police said 17 law enforcement agencies assisted 350 Newport Beach police officers after a 999 call went out, and at least a hundred officers from surrounding agencies converged on the scene as the situation escalated. Young adults and minors blocked roadways and restricted emergency vehicle access, turning what began as a holiday celebration into an emergency response that stretched across the Balboa Peninsula.
City and police officials have blamed social media for the surge, saying posts drew a large influx of juveniles and young adults to the Newport Pier area within minutes. The Newport Beach Police Association said a large group of agitators invaded the city, spurred on by an alleged TikTok Takeover, and Lauren Kleiman said social media played a major role in inciting the chaos Saturday night. But the scene on the ground also came through in the accounts of people trying to get out. Robert Burgeson said there were probably 1,000 teens and young adults cramming the area and that he could not even get out of the parking lot. A Reddit poster described Newport Peninsula as a literal riot, said the place was locked down, and said cops were in riot gear and had to call other cities to help.
Residents later said the beach had been closed from 22nd Street to 36th Street beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday, then sealed off further once the unlawful assembly was declared. What remains unresolved is the exact chain of posts or promoters that pulled the crowd in so fast, but the result is clear: a holiday crowd that swelled into the thousands, a police response that drew in neighboring agencies, and a city now left to explain how a July 4 celebration became one of its most disruptive nights in years.
