Dan Fogler has arrived in House of the Dragon as Ser Torrhen Manderly, and the new character is only on screen for a small stretch of season 3 episode 3 before the story moves him into place for something larger. His first encounter with Rhaenyra Targayren comes after the feast scene at the Red Keep, where the show makes clear that this is not just a passing introduction.
That matters now because episode 3 is built around Rhaenyra’s first days ruling the Seven Kingdoms, with the queen handling petitions from the smallfolk, enemy schemes and spoiled nobility all at once. The episode gives Fogler’s character a sharp entrance into that pressure cooker, and viewers looking for where Team Black’s next ally comes from do not have to wait long to find him.
The setup is blunt. Rhaenyra invites a group of nobles to the Red Keep for a feast, but the meal is made entirely of cooked rats, a reminder of what the smallfolk were forced to eat during the war. She then tells the nobles that their larders will be seized by the crown for redistribution. When Ser Torrhen meets her after that display, he congratulates her on a move well played. In one exchange, the show turns a brief introduction into a signal that he has read the room and, more importantly, chosen a side.
That is where House of the Dragon begins to part ways with Fire & Blood. In the source material, Ser Torrhen Manderly and Ser Medrick Manderly are the eldest sons of House Manderly, and Jacaerys Velaryon later secures an agreement with Lord Desmond Manderly on his way north to treat with Cregan Stark. Jacaerys also arranges a marriage pact between his younger brother Joffrey and Desmond’s youngest daughter, and the Manderlys fight for the Blacks in return. The show is clearly pulling one thread from that history and moving it earlier, while leaving the rest to unfold later.
That also explains the odd balance of Fogler’s appearance: little screen time now, but an evident push toward a larger payoff. House of the Dragon has a sprawling cast, and not every introduction arrives with the space the character will eventually need. Ser Torrhen’s brief appearance suggests the series is using episode 3 to establish him as an ally before giving him more room to matter to Team Black. The remaining question is not whether he is being positioned for more, but how much of that source material the show intends to reveal through him once the setup is done.
