Universal Pictures has released the teaser trailer for Not Alone, putting Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez front and center as the voices of Illumination’s new animated feature. The film is set for theaters on April 16, 2027.
That makes the teaser more than a first look. It confirms Chalamet’s debut in an animated feature and pairs him with Gomez in a project built around a solitary rocket mechanic named Joe and an astro-botanist named Fran, who are pulled together while preparing for a rocket launch. The film is already drawing attention because the two leads are not just sharing a trailer; they are carrying a story that is being sold on chemistry as much as on scale.
Chalamet had already nudged interest in the movie earlier this month with an Instagram post, but the teaser gives the first real sense of what Not Alone is trying to be. It comes from Illumination, with Eric Guillon, Claire Dodgson and Jonathan Del Val directing, and it adds another ensemble piece to a voice cast that also includes Brett Goldstein, Rob Brydon, Jamie Demetriou, Diane Morgan, Allison Janney and Lamorne Morris. The movie was first announced at the Annecy International Film Festival, so the trailer turns a long-running reveal into something audiences can actually date on the calendar.
The story also has a comic snag built into it. Joe is supposed to be a loner, yet three tiny and opinionated aliens move into his home while hiding from an intergalactic officer of the law. That setup gives the title its meaning: the film is built around a man who starts out cut off and ends up surrounded, with the aliens turning isolation into company whether he wants it or not. Fran’s mission to create the first plant-fueled rocket adds another layer, because the launch prep becomes the place where the movie’s romance, chaos and big-idea science all collide.
The next fixed point is the release date, and that is still far away enough to make this teaser the opening move rather than the payoff. Universal Pictures is planning to open Not Alone on April 16, 2027, which leaves room for more marketing, more voice reveals and likely a fuller look at how Chalamet sounds in animation for the first time. For now, the teaser answers the basic question: Chalamet and Gomez are the leads, and Not Alone is now officially on the way.
