Lionsgate marked Haymitch’s birthday with a behind-the-scenes look at The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, and the clip did the one thing fans were waiting for: it introduced Joseph Zada as the younger Haymitch Abernathy. The video also brings Francis Lawrence on screen to frame the prequel, which is built around the version of Haymitch long before Woody Harrelson made the role famous.
That release lands on a date that matters inside the story world, because Haymitch’s birthday is the day of the reaping, the moment tribute selection begins. In the film’s world, the second Quarter Quell doubled the number of participants, turning the stakes into a larger, harsher lottery than the Games had already been. Releasing the first look on that day gives the reveal a built-in reason to spread now, not later.
The featurette does more than place Zada in the part. It shows training room clips with all the tributes and a setting that looks lifted from the ’70s, while Nina Jacobson says Haymitch has mischief to him. Zada says it felt special to share that space with Harrelson, a line that carries the point of the whole rollout without spelling it out. This is not a replacement so much as a handoff, and the comparison to Harrelson is unavoidable because the character already has a face audiences know well.
The footage also hints at the pressure around Haymitch’s path. Lenore Dove tries to protect a tribute who is killed, Haymitch steps in to protect her, and Drusilla Sickle then demands that Haymitch be chosen to take the fallen tribute’s place. Wyatt Callow is the other male tribute, while Maysilee Donner and Lou Lou are the female tributes from District 12. Elsewhere in the prequel timeline, Effie Trinket is still Haymitch’s stylist before she becomes the official escort for District 12, Beetree’s son Ampert is part of the wider history, and Plutarch Heavensbee appears as a cameraman recording the reaping before he later becomes game master for the 75th Annual Hunger Games.
Based on Suzanne Collins’ books, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is being sold as the story of how Haymitch gets there, not just who plays him. The birthday tie-in made the first look feel immediate, but the bigger question is how much of Haymitch’s rise the film is ready to show before its release date is finally set.
