Evanston’s 4th of July festivities lost their evening shine on Saturday when thick fog cloaked the traditional fireworks display and left much of it hard to see. The holiday program also lost the Palatine Concert Band’s performance at the Arrington Lagoon, which was canceled because lingering showers left the area damp.
The Golden Gate Fireworks draw was supposed to be the nightcap for a day built around the holiday tradition, but the weather turned that finale into a hazy show. Spectators still had the event itself, yet the visibility was so poor that the display lost much of its impact.
That contrast mattered because the 4th of July Association’s daytime events managed to avoid the weather woes that hit the evening schedule. By the time darkness fell, the problem was not whether the fireworks would go on. It was whether anyone could see enough of them to count the show as anything close to what was planned.
The canceled band performance and the fog-shrouded display point to the same lesson from Saturday evening: the holiday held together in daylight, then unraveled as the weather shifted. No rescheduled performance or make-up fireworks show was confirmed, leaving the evening’s main attraction defined more by what the fog hid than by what the pyrotechnics revealed.
