Pittsburgh is still planning to light up the sky on Saturday, July 4, with fireworks scheduled for 9:35 p.m. after a drone performance, even as city officials watch the weather and keep the option open to move the launch earlier or later. Molly Onufer said the timing could change if conditions turn unsafe because of an approaching storm.
The city’s Independence Day festivities, tied to America’s 250th birthday, are set to draw crowds to Downtown and the North Shore beginning at 4 p.m., with Plain White T's headlining at 8 p.m. on the main stage. The night also includes Kahone Concept and Eternal Boy, along with other area performers, before what officials are describing as Pittsburgh’s biggest fireworks display in decades.
The setup is built for a large downtown holiday crowd. Fireworks will launch from six barges on the Allegheny, Ohio and Monongahela rivers, as well as rooftops, while the rest of the festival brings family-friendly activities, food vendors, a marketplace, a hot air balloon, a Ferris wheel and veterans wellness resources. The Ferris wheel is set to go up on the North Shore on July 1 and remain through July 5.
That scale is also why the weather matters now. Onufer said the safety of attendees, staff and contractors remains the top priority, and the city is making the call with the fireworks contractor as July 4 approaches. If the forecast worsens, the show could be pushed back until conditions improve or moved up before the storm reaches Downtown and the North Shore.
For families deciding when to head out, the key detail is simple: the celebration starts at 4 p.m., the headliner takes the stage at 8 p.m., and the fireworks are still slated for 9:35 p.m. unless the weather forces a change. By the time the sky goes dark, Pittsburgh will know whether the night ends on schedule or on a revised one.
