Witnesses on social media said a shooting and possible active shooter situation was unfolding at Fairlane Mall in Dearborn, Michigan, as people inside the building sheltered in stores and others ran for the exits.
One Facebook user wrote, “I’m at fairlane and they shooting we had to run out the mall,” while another said a daughter was hiding in a store stock room and that “it’s people shooting in the Mall.” A third post said, “Why we in Fairlane and somebody started shooting so now we might be stuck in the mall multiple people shot.”
Videos shared online appeared to show chaotic scenes, and that is why the reports spread quickly: they described a fast-moving public safety incident with shoppers, workers and families trying to make sense of what was happening in real time. Another witness urged people to stay away, writing, “Stay away from Fairlane Mall right now. Shooting is happening.”
The reports remained unconfirmed by authorities at the time of the article, which left the most basic question unanswered even as the posts multiplied: whether a shooting actually occurred at Fairlane Mall, and if so how many people may have been injured. One more witness summed up the confusion by saying, “I walked up and people were running out…..I politely turned around.”
For now, the only clear picture is that Fairlane Mall in Dearborn became the focus of alarming claims, frightened posts and shared video before any official confirmation caught up with the scene.
