A viral claim that The Simpsons predicted the World Cup final for 2026 has been knocked down again. The clip making the rounds comes from a 1997 episode, and it shows Mexico vs. Portugal in a television advertisement, not the final of this year's tournament.
The posts spread fast because 2026 is on the calendar and Mexico is one of the host nations. That gave the old clip a fresh audience, and some versions of the claim went further by adding Cristiano Ronaldo, even though he was never referenced in the episode.
The episode at the center of the latest wave is Season 9, Episode 5, titled The Cartridge Family. In that scene, the match is played up as exceptionally tedious and exasperating, until the Springfield crowd riots and the stadium falls into complete pandemonium. Nowhere in the episode is there any reference to 2026, and nothing in it points to a World Cup final.
That gap matters because the story being sold online is not a close reading of the show. It is a repackaged clip, trimmed and recirculated until a fictional Mexico vs. Portugal advertisement starts to look like a forecast. The same claim has already been debunked before, during the 2018 World Cup and again during the 2022 World Cup, but it returns whenever a major tournament is getting close.
The pull of the claim is easy to understand. The Simpsons has a long-running reputation for prophecy, helped by sharp social commentary, a writing team with strong mathematical backgrounds and the simple odds of getting some predictions right across more than 750 episodes. But the show did not predict the 2019 Notre Dame fire, and it did not predict Donald Trump descending a golden escalator before that happened in real life in 2015.
