Alexia Putellas has been linked with London City Lionesses as Michele Kang’s big-spending project tries to turn promotion into a business that now moves close to 3 million pounds. The move arrives as the club steps into the Women’s Super League and leans on fresh commercial deals to match its new status.
That is a sharp shift for a club founded in 2019 and sold by Diane Culligan to Kang in December 2023 after the players had reportedly asked her to sell it. Kang has already put in about 22.4 million pounds, or 26 million euros, over two years, with 9.9 million pounds first used to steady the finances and another 12.5 million pounds added in 2024-2025.
The scale is striking because the club had less than 920,000 pounds in revenue in 2024-2025 before the latest uplift, while losses since founding have reached 15.7 million pounds and the most recent season alone produced a 10.6 million pound deficit. Yet the promotion has opened the door to new commercial deals with Nike, Togethxr and Mastercard, and that is helping push the operation toward a level that is still small by top-flight standards but far larger than what the club managed only a year ago.
There is still a gap between the ambition and the balance sheet. The club is said to be moving close to 3 million pounds in business, but the breakdown between sponsorship, television and other income has not been made public, leaving the real shape of the uplift unclear even as Kang keeps funding the project. That mirrors her intervention at OL Lyonnes in France, where she also stepped in to back a rebuild rather than wait for the market to do it for her.
For now, Putellas is the headline name attached to a club whose finances are changing faster than its scale. The next question is not whether Kang is willing to spend. It is how quickly London City Lionesses can convert elite signings and elite rivals into a business that finally begins to catch up with the money already poured in.
