Major Jason Watson was arrested today on the steps of the US Capitol after standing there with a sign calling for Donald Trump to be impeached, removed and convicted. The active US Air Force officer took part in what was described as a nonviolent act of civil disobedience in Washington, D.C.
The arrest gives a human face to a protest that was built around one demand: that Congress act on impeachment. Watson said every Member of Congress should follow the leadership of Al Green and support articles of impeachment against President Trump, while urging Americans to keep protesting peacefully until Congress meets what he called its constitutional duty.
Watson did not appear alone. At a press conference organized by the Removal Coalition, he was joined by Jessica Denson, Al Green, members of About Face Veterans, Bruce Fein, Defenders of Our Republic and other advocates, turning a single arrest into a public show of support for the broader impeachment campaign.
That campaign did not begin today. Free Speech For People launched it on Inauguration Day, and the group says it has already gathered more than 1.1 million petition signatures asking Congress to initiate impeachment proceedings. It also says it has documented hundreds of impeachable offenses across 27 separate grounds, a scale meant to show this is not a one-off protest but a sustained push.
The friction is hard to miss. Watson called for peaceful, nonviolent protest, yet his own act still ended in arrest at the Capitol. No specific legal basis for that arrest was given, leaving the most immediate question not about the protest’s message but about how authorities chose to respond to it.
John Bonifaz, speaking about the arrest, said Watson showed “the kind of courage our democracy demands” and honored the same oath that every Member of Congress has taken. He added that Congress has both the authority and the constitutional obligation to impeach and remove Donald Trump from public office, and that the moment demands lawmakers stand up and bring proceedings against what he called a lawless president.
