The Calgary Flames traded Olli Maatta and Blake Coleman to the Minnesota Wild on July 1, landing defenceman Jake Middleton and three draft picks in return. Calgary also kept 50 per cent of Coleman’s $4.9 million cap hit on a contract set to expire next summer.
The deal gives the Flames a 2029 second-round pick, a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fourth-round pick, while Minnesota gets the veteran scoring touch of Coleman and a defender in Maatta. Coleman had 20 goals and 35 points in 69 games last season, and he is entering the final season of a six-year, $29.4 million contract that has already taken him through two Stanley Cup championships with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021.
Middleton brings a different profile. He had two goals and 16 points in 75 games last season, averaged 17:30 of ice time in the regular season and added an assist in 11 playoff games while logging 16:31 a night before Minnesota was eliminated in the second round. He is entering the second season of a four-year, $17.4 million deal with a $4.35 million cap hit and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2028-29 campaign.
That is where the trade gets interesting. The numbers explain why Calgary could justify moving Coleman: a productive winger on an expiring deal, with 170 goals and 325 points in 693 career games, still carries value even as the Flames absorb only half the cap hit. But the package also included Maatta, and no explanation was given for why Calgary added him to the move. The result is a swap that clearly serves both present needs and future planning, while leaving one part of the decision hanging.
For Maatta, the next step is simple. His new team is Minnesota, which means the Wild now have him for a roster reset that also sends three draft picks back to Calgary. Coleman, meanwhile, goes with him, and the Flames turn July 1 into a deal that changes both the lineup and the draft board at the same time.
