Prime Video’s Elle arrived July 1 with Lexi Minetree stepping into the role of teenage Elle Woods, and the prequel was already renewed for season two before viewers got to see a frame. That makes the new series more than a nostalgic add-on to Legally Blonde; it is now a continuing origin story for one of the franchise’s most recognizable characters.
For readers searching the title today, the appeal is obvious. Elle asks what Elle Woods looked like before Harvard Law School and before the polished confidence Reese Witherspoon made famous in 2001. Minetree, 25, said her audition included a self-produced remake of Elle Woods’ Harvard application video, a detail that fits the show’s effort to keep the character recognizable even while going backward in time. Witherspoon is also an executive producer on the series, so the new version is being built with the original stamp still on it.
That continuity matters because the creative team has been open about the balancing act. Laura Kittrell said the goal was always to keep the optimism, joy and kindness that define the character, while Caroline Dries called the film the show’s north star and said the writers stayed deferential to what happened in the movie, tonally and plot-wise. In other words, the series is not trying to replace the original. It is trying to live beside it.
At the same time, the prequel has to make room for its own run. Dries said the story shifts Elle Woods’ world into a high school where grunge, flannel and black dominate, after the Woods family starts in sunny Los Angeles and moves to Seattle. She described the setting as bleak, rainy and cloudy, and said the kids there are anti-establishment, while Elle has never even thought that way. Those changes are not just for atmosphere. They create the kind of new circumstances a multi-season show needs if it is going to keep going after the first chapter.
Minetree said Witherspoon reminded her that Elle always takes the high road, never becomes a bully, and still stands up for herself. That balance is central to the performance, and it also explains why the new series keeps circling back to the original film even as it branches out. There are meanies in the show, Minetree said, but Elle still shows kindness and eventually connects with them, and they become her friends. That keeps the character intact while giving the prequel room to stretch.
The result is a franchise move with a built-in next step: season two. The open question is not whether Elle is coming back, but how far it can go before the story of Elle Woods reaches the point where Legally Blonde already begins. For now, the answer is that the new series is betting viewers will follow her there.
