The Social Security Administration will begin issuing limited-edition Social Security 250th Anniversary Cards to U.S. babies born between July 2 and Dec. 31, 2026, putting the Freedom 250 logo on a federal card many families receive with little notice and no extra cost.
The timing is deliberate. The new cards are tied to America’s 250th anniversary celebration, and the agency is using the six-month window to mark the country’s 250th year with an official document that will reach newborns automatically through the Enumeration at Birth program.
For parents, the process will not change. They will not need to submit extra paperwork, pay a fee or sign up for a special version. The commemorative card will function exactly like a standard Social Security card, and it will not change a child’s Social Security number or the card’s legal role.
The design is reserved only for original cards issued during that qualifying period. Babies born before July 2 or after Dec. 31, 2026, will get the standard version, and anyone asking for a replacement card will also receive the standard design instead. That keeps the keepsake limited, but it also means the special treatment exists only at the start, when the card is first issued.
The cards will be produced at no additional cost to families or taxpayers, which is what makes the program unusual. It is a commemorative gesture, but it is built into the same system that already lets parents request a Social Security number while completing birth registration paperwork at hospitals, birthing centers or through licensed midwives.
Frank J. Bisignano said the Freedom 250 effort is a celebration of America’s history, including the creation of Social Security more than 90 years ago, and said the next generation born during the historic year will receive cards bearing the Freedom 250 logo. He also said the agency is working to strengthen Social Security, improve service and build an SSA that serves Americans today and in the future.
The broader backdrop is that President Donald Trump announced Trump Accounts on Wednesday for children born in the U.S. between Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 31, 2028. Against that deadline, the new Social Security cards make the federal birth-registration process part keepsake, part routine paperwork, with the special design appearing only once and only for babies born inside the window.
How many newborns will receive the cards during those six months has not been stated, but the answer will be set by the number of U.S. births that fall between July 2 and Dec. 31, 2026. For families in that slice of time, the commemorative card will arrive automatically; for everyone else, the standard card remains the only option.
