Kick-off for Mexico vs Ecuador in the 2026 World Cup was looking set to be delayed on Tuesday after thunderstorms and recent lightning in Mexico City forced pre-match warm-ups to stop. The 9pm ET start was already seen as unlikely, with neither team out on the field and no formal word yet passed to fans at the Azteca.
The delay came just before a round-of-32 match that was supposed to carry the kind of energy only a home crowd can give. Obed Vargas said Mexico expected a really dynamic, focused Ecuador side, one that was very quick and very strong, but added that the team hoped to come out on top at home in front of their people.
That made the weather interruption more than a nuisance. It pushed back the opening minutes of a game that had already been shaped by the setting, where Mexico had five players from Club Guadalajara in its 26-man squad, including Luis Romo, Brian Gutierrez, Roberto Alvarado, Armando Gonzalez and Raul Rangel. Those five accounted for 19.2 per cent of the roster, a reminder of how much of the team’s identity was tied to Club Guadalajara in the build-up to the match.
There was also a more emotional thread running through the night. Before the Mexico vs Ecuador match, Antonio Valencia and Jefferson Montero led tributes to Christian “Chucho” Benitez, the Ecuadorian striker who played much of his club football in Mexico City before dying in 2013 at 27 years old. Montero wrote on X that Ecuador would be with the team in the stands and in their hearts, and said there would be one more supporter cheering them on: an Ecuadorian who made history at the Azteca.
The friction point was plain enough. The match was being delayed by weather, but fans at the Azteca still had not been told anything official. That left a scheduled World Cup knockout game in limbo, with the only clear rule of the moment that lightning overhead can stop warm-ups and delay kick-off until it is safe to resume. For now, the next step was simple: wait for confirmation on how long the hold would last and whether the 9pm ET start could survive it.
