Hernán Galíndez says Lionel Messi scored the first goal of his life against him when they were neighbors in Rosario, a detail that now sits at the center of a career that took him from local fields to Ecuador’s national-team orbit. The goalkeeper said he still has a DVD of the seven against seven match, a childhood game with ten bicycles as the prize for the winner.
Galíndez, now at Huracán, is being searched again because the Rosario-born keeper is part of Ecuador’s present and future, with Mundial 2026 in the background. He did not start as a goalkeeper. He began as a midfielder, was told to put on the gloves, and later passed through Estrella Juniors before entering the youth system of Rosario Central, where he shared a division with Ángel Di María.
His first official appearance for Rosario Central came in the Torneo Apertura 2008 after Jorge “Fatura” Broun was sent off against Racing. By 2010, Galíndez was in the squad that lost to All Boys at the Gigante de Arroyito and suffered relegation, the fourth in the club’s history. He later said Central fans still message him with insults, a reminder that the same city that formed him also left scars that never fully faded.
That is the turn that explains why Ecuador mattered so much. After a brief spell at Quilmes, Galíndez moved on to Universidad Católica de Ecuador, and in 2012 Rangers de Talca bought his federative rights before he arrived on loan there. He was promoted in his first season, stayed nine more years, played 396 matches, became captain and turned into an absolute reference point. At one point, he even scored a penalty against Clan Juvenil on 29 October 2017.
The harder part came before the recovery. Galíndez said he suffered threats in Rosario and thought about leaving football, calling that period dark, but Ecuador gave him the chance to enjoy the game again. In February 2019, the Ecuador federation proposed that he begin the naturalization process so he could be an option for the national team, a path that was made possible by his club form and by time.
He later made his full debut for Ecuador at Copa América 2021 under Gustavo Alfaro, starting in the 2-2 draw against Perú and then in the 1-1 draw with Brasil, where he produced a memorable save against Gabriel Barbosa. Ecuador then met Lionel Scaloni’s team in the quarterfinals, and Galíndez’s place in that setup was no accident. The unanswered piece is not whether he belonged there. It is how a boy from Rosario, once shaken enough to consider quitting, ended up becoming one of the names that defined Ecuador’s modern goalkeeping story.
