Peta Murgatroyd and Maksim Chmerkovskiy have officially left Los Angeles for Florida, settling in Boca Raton with their three sons after 16 years in the same home. Murgatroyd marked the move on Monday with a YouTube video and a pair of Instagram posts that showed the family in the middle of the change, not after it was neatly finished.
The move drew attention because Murgatroyd did not frame it as a simple relocation. She wrote that there are tears you do not expect, goodbyes that hit harder than you imagined, and moments when you wonder whether you are making the right decision. She also said that sometimes you have to leave what is comfortable to find what is meant for you, and added that she and Chmerkovskiy knew they had made the best decision for their family.
In the videos, the emotional shift was easy to see. Murgatroyd and Chmerkovskiy appeared in a car with moving boxes in the backseat, both crying as the family closed one chapter and started another. In the YouTube video, Murgatroyd looked at their empty Los Angeles home after everything had been packed up and said, “It’s been a fun ride, LA.” She said the home had been theirs for 16 years and that they needed to move on to new things, new life and new adventures, and make new memories.
Their three boys — Shai, 9, Rio, 3, and Milan, 1 — are at the center of that decision. Murgatroyd said their sons are happy, their hearts are full, and the family is grateful for the new chapter. She later described the happiness, the slower pace and the sunshine as everything they had hoped for, especially watching their boys love every second of it. The move, in other words, was not sold as an escape but as a trade: less familiarity, more room to live the life they wanted.
But the goodbye was not clean. Murgatroyd also said Shai’s bike was stolen during the move period and linked that loss to a day earlier when the couple helped a woman they said had been digging through their trash. She said the woman, who said she was from Georgia and appeared to be in her 20s, was given food and blankets, and Chmerkovskiy said, “We went through our fridge.” The couple even left their garage door open so she could see what was there, which made the theft sting harder than a normal moving-day problem.
That is the part that gives the move its weight. This was not just a family changing addresses; it was a public goodbye to a home they had lived in for 16 years, a move across the country, and a moment of relief mixed with loss. Murgatroyd has made clear that Florida already feels right for them. What she has not said is whether Boca Raton is their permanent base or simply the first stop in a longer reset, and that is the question left open as the boxes are unpacked and the family settles in.
