The takeover at the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail ended Monday afternoon after inmates overpowered correctional officers and held control of the facility for nearly 10 hours. By the time the response was over, all inmates and staff were accounted for and safe.
That is the reason people were searching for the North Carolina jail incident on Monday: it began around 5 a.m., involved 88 inmates and three correctional officers, and turned into a hostage situation before authorities regained control. Tyrone Ruffin said the jail had been taken over and two correctional officers had been held hostage.
The Bertie County Sheriff's Office got the first call around 5 a.m., and the first deputy arrived within two minutes but could not enter the facility. One correctional officer escaped shortly after the incident began, while two others were taken hostage. Negotiations led to the safe release of the two hostage officers and 18 inmates around 9:30 a.m., and about 20 minutes later another group of inmates was released from the facility.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said agents with the SBI and FBI secured the jail Monday afternoon, and inmates were then transferred to other detention facilities while investigators assessed the damage inside. Sheriff Ruffin later said all three correctional officers were safe and had received medical treatment, and that there were no fatalities. Inmates who sustained injuries also received medical treatment.
The friction in this case is plain: officials say everyone came out accounted for, yet the incident still involved hostages, injuries and a jail that could not be secured for hours. That leaves the key question less about how it ended than how inmates were able to overpower officers and seize control in the first place.
