Lauren Koslow returned to The Young and the Restless on Monday, June 29, stepping in as Jill Abbott after Jess Walton was unable to make the trip from her home in Oregon to Los Angeles because of a scheduling conflict. It was a last-minute handoff, but one that fit into a crowded week for Koslow and gave the show a familiar face in one of its longtime roles.
Koslow said she heard about the opportunity on a Friday and was asked to help out the following week. She had spent the past 30 years playing Kate Roberts on Days of Our Lives, but this return took her back to the CBS studio where she had once played Lindsey Wells from 1984 to 1986. The shift was meaningful because it came with almost no lead time and because Jill Abbott is one of the show’s most established parts.
Josh Griffith, The Young and the Restless head writer, called Koslow about stepping in, and she said the connection made sense because she had worked for him before in Salem. Koslow also said she had gone to fan sites to catch up on what had been happening, adding that the audience knows best when a role carries this much history. Her first scene partners in the return were Billy Flynn and Jason Thompson.
The swap carried a built-in tension. Koslow was not replacing a new character or filling in for a short stretch of dialogue. She was stepping into Jill Abbott, a role identified with Walton, while also trying to honor a performance that viewers know well. Koslow said she had forgotten how word-intensive The Young and the Restless can be, and that concern pushed her to run lines all weekend before the first week of shooting.
That week turned into a back-to-back soap marathon. Koslow said she worked at Days on Tuesday and Wednesday, then moved to The Young and the Restless on Thursday and Friday. She described the return as emotional, saying the trip back to the CBS studio felt like going back in time and that the makeup room looked exactly as it had in the 1980s. Even the placard on the dressing room door brought back the past, greeting her with a welcome back to Lindsey Wells.
What remains unanswered is how long Koslow will stay in the part. For now, the answer is simple: she is there because Walton could not travel, and she is there on a limited, last-minute basis that keeps Jill Abbott on screen without interrupting the show’s pace. In daytime television, that kind of handoff is rare enough to matter, and brief enough that viewers will be watching for the next change as closely as the one that just happened.
