The result sent Hovland into Sunday’s final pairing with Scheffler in a round that could decide the PGA TOUR event.
That set up the finish readers were looking for. TPC River Highlands is still yielding birdie chances because of soft conditions and little wind, and the winner is now expected to clear the Travelers Championship scoring record of 23 under par that Keegan Bradley set in 2023.
Hovland’s move to the top does not erase the chase behind him. Akshay Bhatia and Patrick Cantlay were still tied for third at 15 under after round 3, while Sam Burns sat tied for 10th after three clean Ballstriking rounds without his putter ever catching fire. The leaderboard has narrowed at the top, but it has not shut the door on the players just behind it.
Clark offered the clearest sign of how punishing the week has been even for players still posting low numbers. After a 5-under 65, he said he was “running on fumes,” looking ahead to next week and not planning to touch a club, a line that sounded less like a post-round quote than a player trying to get through to Sunday. His finish was impressive, but he was too far back to turn it into a comeback story.
That is why Sunday matters now: Hovland and Scheffler get the final pairing, the course is still giving up birdies, and the record is within reach. If one of them handles the closing stretch, the Travelers Championship may end with a score that rewrites the standard set two years ago.
