That mix matters because the morning was relatively calm. Temperatures were around 80 degrees inland and 76 on the coast, a few degrees cooler than recent days, and rain east of Miami was not expected to reach the city in the morning. But the quiet start does not hold. Afternoon storms are expected to affect the metropolitan area, especially to the west, and the chance of showers and thunderstorms is 40% to 50% later in the day.
The air warning is tied to smoke from nearby forest fires, which could also reduce visibility. The report links that smoke smell to atmospheric dispersion in the morning, but it does not identify which fires are responsible. By the weekend, Saharan dust is expected to arrive, and that should help push rain chances down to 10% even as highs edge up to 94 or 95 degrees on Saturday.
