Tim Allen says Buzz Lightyear’s kiss with Jessie in Toy Story 5 landed as “creepy” when he first read it, even though the scene ends up as part of a pretend wedding that pushes the franchise into new territory. The moment comes at the end of the film, after Jessie surprises Buzz with a kiss when he confesses his feelings for her.
That reaction matters now because Allen is still the voice of Buzz Lightyear, and he described reading the scene as if he were a child watching it from the edge of the room. “When I’m doing [Toy Story], I’m literally an 8-year-old kid,” he said, adding that the Buzz he hears in his head feels more like his 11-year-old self. He said he even thought about watching the scene with his daughters, and noted that kissing scenes tend to make everyone go quiet. “Are you going to show this?” he recalled asking, before the larger question in the story becomes unavoidable: can the characters get married?
Allen later said he came around to the scene because of the reaction it provokes. “I loved [it] because it affects everybody in the room,” he said, describing the split between adults and children who answer with an “Eew!” That mix is part of why the moment stands out, but it also shows how far the franchise is willing to go with a long-running romance that has been building for years. In Toy Story 5, Bonnie holds a pretend wedding for Buzz and Jessie, and the two do tie the knot.
The same interview also moved beyond the film and into Allen’s own life. Earlier this month, he said he “never really wanted” to be a father, then talked about how sobriety changed that story. Allen said he got sober in 1997 after his DUI arrest and has been sober for almost 30 years. He said he made amends to Katherine, now 36, and added that Elizabeth, 17, never knew “any of that guy.” Katherine, he said, does not hold his past against him. That detail gives his discomfort over the scene another layer: the man voicing Buzz is not just reacting as a performer, but as a father who says he has spent decades trying to separate the person he was from the person he is now.
For Disney, the new kiss is not just a joke or a shock beat. It is a signal that Toy Story 5 is treating Buzz and Jessie’s relationship as something the room is meant to notice, not glide past. What remains unclear is how much of the wedding is played for comedy, how much is played straight, and how far the final cut goes in making that romance the emotional center of the ending.
