The World Cup 2026 group stage now has a clear shape: the top two teams in each group go through, and the eight best third-placed sides also reach the last 32. Mexico are already through as group winners, while the race behind them is being decided by goal difference, head-to-head records and, if needed, disciplinary points and Fifa ranking.
That matters now because the table is tight enough that small margins are doing real work. Five points will be enough to qualify based on results so far, even though some teams still sit on one or two points after two games, and the third-place picture has become a live sorting exercise rather than a waiting game.
Among the sides chasing those last places, Sweden had 3 points with a 6-6 record and 0 GD after two games, Scotland also had 3 points with a 1-1 record and 0 GD, Croatia had 3 points with a 3-4 record and -1 GD, Algeria had 3 points with a 2-4 record and -2 GD, and Paraguay had 3 points with a 2-4 record and -2 GD, plus team conduct of -11. Cape Verde and Belgium were both on 2 points, while Czechia, DR Congo, Ecuador and Bosnia and Herzegovina were all on 1 point, and Senegal had none.
The ranking for the eight best third-placed teams is not just a points table. It runs through points first, then goal difference, goals scored, fair-play status and Fifa ranking, which is why a team on 2 points can still be alive and a team on 3 points is not automatically safe. That is also why Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar can still think in terms of a heavy win and a place among the best third-placed sides, even from a position that looks fragile on paper.
Mexico’s position is clearer. They have already secured top spot, and their reward is a last-32 tie against a third-placed team from Group C, Group E, Group F, Group H or Group I. South Korea can still qualify with a win or draw against South Africa, while Czechia would go through in second if they beat Mexico, South Africa beat South Korea and they finish above South Africa. South Africa need the opposite path: beat South Korea and then finish above Czechia.
There are still direct qualification paths for others too. Canada will guarantee qualification with a draw or win against Switzerland, and Switzerland will guarantee it with a win or draw against Canada. Brazil will guarantee qualification with a draw or win against Scotland, and Morocco will guarantee qualification with a draw or win against Haiti. The final answer on the third-place table will come from the remaining fixtures, but the shape of the knockout round is already visible.
For teams clinging to third place, the next result may matter more than the points total alone. Mexico v Czechia, South Africa v South Korea, Switzerland v Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina v Qatar are the matches that will keep sorting the bracket, and once they are done, the last 32 will look far less crowded and far more final.
