Gold slid $73.15, or 1.75%, to $4,118.77 and traded as low as $4,090.93, pulling the market back into a swing area that traders have been watching for signs of support. The move puts the silver price conversation back on the same kind of technical footing, where buyers and sellers are now testing whether a recent drop will stop at support or deepen into a larger break.
That matters because the market has already shown it can draw a bid there. Buyers stepped in earlier this month inside the $4,006.99 to $4,098.74 zone and sparked a rebound, which is why the latest retest is drawing attention today. The 38.2% retracement of the rally from the September 2022 low sits at $4,079.35, almost directly beneath the day’s low, giving the area added weight as short-term support.
The 200-day moving average is also part of the picture. Gold has stayed below that benchmark for roughly 13 consecutive sessions, a sign that trend control has remained with sellers even as the market repeatedly probes support. That creates a split message for traders: the swing area has been able to attract dip buying, but the broader trend measure has not yet been reclaimed.
The friction point is plain enough. If gold breaks below $4,006.99 and then slips under $4,000, the technical picture would deteriorate significantly. That would leave the earlier rebound looking less like a durable floor and more like a pause inside a broader decline. For now, the market is still sitting inside the zone where buyers have already proven they will show up, but the burden is on them to do it again before the lower boundary gives way.
What happens next depends on whether that support can keep holding. A defense of the $4,006.99 to $4,098.74 band would keep the latest pullback contained and preserve the chance of another rebound, while a break through $4,000 would hand the advantage more firmly to sellers and force a rethinking of the chart. In a market being judged one support line at a time, the next move is likely to be decided where gold already turned once this month.
