Ebuka Okorie has stayed in the 2026 NBA Draft after a Stanford season that changed the way scouts see him. The guard, who was not expected to be a one-and-done player, is now projected as a first-round pick after getting positive feedback and deciding to keep his name in.
That projection matters because Okorie did more than flash. He averaged over 23 points, finished seventh nationally in scoring and helped Stanford to 20 wins and a.500 conference record. He also picked up first-team All-ACC honors and ACC All-Rookie honors, two markers that turned a productive season into a real draft case.
For Okorie, this is the endpoint of a long climb. He grew up in Nashua, N.H., spent three years at Cushing Academy in Worcester County, Mass., then moved to Brewster Academy in New Hampshire for his final high school season. There he led Brewster to the semifinals of the Chipotle Nationals championships, and he rose from a three-star recruit outside the top 300 to a consensus top-125 player and a four-star recruit.
The reasons for the first-round buzz are obvious enough: he can touch the paint, which matters in the biggest moments, and that trait alone can bend a defense. The drawbacks are just as clear. He still needs to sharpen his finishing, passing, shooting release speed and defense, which is why the gap between being worth a top-20 pick and becoming a reliable NBA player right away is still real.
That is the tension around Okorie now. He has the production, the youth and the upward trajectory to make a front office lean in, but his early impact will depend on whether those weak spots close fast enough. If they do, the Stanford guard may end up looking like one of the cleaner bets in the 2026 NBA Draft; if they do not, he may need time before the game catches up to the talent.
