Joe Manganiello says a seven-year autoimmune battle pushed his body into chronic pain, damaged multiple systems and ended with a life-saving organ amputation. He is now laying out the ordeal in his upcoming memoir, Bloodlines.
He described the period as one he would not wish on his worst enemy, saying it was the most difficult time of his life. The actor, 49, said the illness hit his skin, thyroid, eyes, lungs and digestive system, leaving him to live through a cascade of problems with little relief.
That is why readers are turning to his name now. The memoir is set for release on Oct. 13, and Manganiello has been speaking publicly about a health crisis that unfolded while he was already in the spotlight. In June, he told People that the chapter marked the hardest stretch he had ever faced.
What makes the story harder to reduce to a clean medical headline is that Manganiello says doctors had few answers and no clear explanation for what was happening. The illness moved through different parts of his body, but the path to understanding it never fully settled into one diagnosis he could point to.
In trying to make sense of it, he turned beyond medicine, seeking guidance through shamans, pagan rituals, ancient myths, long-lost family records and spirituality. He has also linked Bloodlines to family history and the Armenian genocide, suggesting the memoir is as much about where he came from as what his body endured.
He had previously described another health-related routine in March 2025, saying sports nutritionist Chris Tally would take 10 vials of his blood and later return with 26 pages of results. That process was about diet and physical performance; this memoir story is something far more severe, a long illness that changed how he lived in public and in private.
What remains unanswered is the detail Manganiello has not spelled out: which organ had to be removed to save his life. Bloodlines is due out on Oct. 13, and that may be the moment he finally fills in the last gap himself.
