Olivia Rodrigo says she is already writing again, but she has not decided whether the new material will become a deluxe album, a separate release or something else entirely. The question matters now because she has just moved past the June 12 release of her third studio album, and listeners are already trying to read the next move.
Rodrigo made that uncertainty plain in a recent update, saying she does not know yet what the songs will turn into. “I've been writing a lot,” she said. “Maybe it will turn into a deluxe. Maybe it will turn into something else. I don't know. I'm still figuring it out.” For fans, that leaves the door open without promising a specific format.
The timing makes the comment land harder. Her new album, You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So In Love, arrived with the singles “drop dead” and “the cure,” but Rodrigo has also said the material she is writing now sounds very different from that world. She told Apple Music the new songs are “so dissimilar to this world,” even as she said she still has “such a reverence” for the person she was when she made the record.
That is the friction inside the story. Rodrigo has done this before in different ways: she did not release a deluxe version of her debut album, Sour, but she did expand her sophomore album, Guts, with Guts (Spilled). That edition added four additional songs, including the previously released vinyl exclusives and the new track “So American.”
Her current comments suggest the next release may not follow the same pattern. Rodrigo said she made the record two years ago and that tastes and identity change quickly, adding that “you can't make records fast enough.” For now, that leaves the next step unresolved, but it also makes one thing clear: the music she is writing now belongs to a different moment, and she is not ready to force it into the old one.
