The result matters now because the Braves were staring at another missed chance in a tight series game. Grant Holmes took the brunt of it for the Braves, working 4 2/3 innings and giving up Machado’s homer while also issuing five walks and striking out four. Walt Weiss pulled him after back-to-back walks in the fifth, then Didier Fuentes came in and struck out Gavin Sheets. The line tells the story plainly: San Diego did not need a lot of offense when Holmes kept putting runners on and King kept getting clean outs behind him.
What made the Braves’ night feel so thin was the shape of their chances. They had the leadoff runner aboard in a handful of innings, the sort of starts that can tilt a game if the next two at-bats are clean, but they never turned any of them into the tying run. Jackson Merrill also helped erase contact in center field, where he caught a half-dozen balls hit his way and kept the Braves from finding extra grass.
That left Atlanta with its second straight loss and another reminder that a hack-at-everything approach can leave too much to chance against a pitcher working ahead. King did not have to survive a barrage of loud contact; he only had to keep resetting the count, and the bullpen finished the job once the Padres had the lead. The Braves now get another shot the next night from Petco Park, with JR Ritchie scheduled to start at 9:40 p.m. ET against a To Be Announced opponent.
