Moshe Kasher said he is recovering from a five-hour surgery for Stage 1 tonsil cancer, a diagnosis he disclosed after finding a bump on his tonsil three months earlier. The 47-year-old comedian said he is waiting to learn next week whether the treatment will stop there or whether radiation will still be needed.
Kasher said the surgery on June 19 removed cancerous areas and involved his throat and neck, leaving him with a swollen and bruised mouth and a hard neck scar. He said the cancer was caused by HPV and that his doctors described it as having an incredibly high cure rate, in the 95% zone.
He said he first noticed the bump while filming The Comeback King with Judd Apatow in Savannah, Georgia, then shared the diagnosis in a June 21 Instagram post. Kasher also said he and Natasha Leggero had recorded an episode for The Endless Honeymoon Podcast before the operation, giving him one more thing to finish before the surgery he had been bracing for.
The message that landed hardest was the one that did not fit the usual recovery script: Kasher said his body feels great even as he described the experience as a terrifying, reality-altering nightmare. He wrote that he feels sick without feeling physically sick, a split that captures how quickly a cancer diagnosis can upend a life even when the outlook is good. His father died of a different, less curable cancer, he said, which sharpened the stakes of this one.
Kasher’s next step is straightforward and still unresolved. After the surgery removed his tonsils and 25 lymph nodes, he said he will find out next week whether microscopic spread was found and whether radiation is part of the road ahead. For now, he said he expects to be okay, but the treatment plan is not finished yet.
