Britney Spears said on Instagram on Sunday, June 21, that coats, jewelry and half her wardrobe went missing three years ago, and that the loss pushed her to “rebel” online afterward. In the post, she said the episode made her feel cheap, crazy and completely helpless.
The 44-year-old singer paired the message with photos of a glittering gold outfit, a sheer mini dress with floral detailing on the bodice and a lingerie set trimmed in black lace. She wrote that she was not trying to play the victim, but was still curious how people could make her feel that way after the items disappeared from her home.
Spears said the missing clothes were not even the whole point. What hurt, she said, was the emotional whiplash of being told there was nothing to do about it. She said the response landed so hard that it changed her physically, and that she later began showing herself on Instagram as cheap and probably secretly angry.
That explanation lands in a public life that has already been crowded with private upheaval. Spears has sons Sean Preston and Jayden James with Kevin Federline, announced a pregnancy loss in May 2022 with Sam Asghari, married Asghari in June 2022 and finalized the divorce in May 2024. She was also arrested in March on suspicion of driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs, later accepted a plea deal in May and was sentenced to 12 months of probation and one day in jail, with time served.
She also used the post to pivot to something more hopeful. Spears said she bought a guitar in Mexico because she hopes one day she can have another baby, calling it an emotional day and linking the instrument to music and gentle strings. But the unanswered part is the one she put at the end herself: whether the people who came into her home knew exactly what they were doing, or whether the missing clothes, jewelry and coats are simply another loss she has had to carry without a resolution.
