Virginia Beach police evacuated people from Strawbridge Marketplace on Monday afternoon after a person barricaded themselves inside a red SUV at the shopping center in the Red Mill area. The vehicle drew immediate attention because bright yellow words on its side read "VBPD = Terrorists," and a heart also appeared to be painted there.
That was enough to turn an ordinary shopping trip into a scene of tape, distance and uncertainty. John Hood, a Virginia Beach reporter, captured video showing police tape stretched around the area and a small crowd standing by as officers kept people away from the center, which includes a Regal theater, restaurants, an animal care center and other businesses.
The response mattered because police were not dealing with a parked vehicle or a routine disturbance. They were facing a barricaded-person situation at a busy retail center, and the message on the SUV complicated the picture even further. The red SUV also had a rooftop cargo carrier on top, making it easy to spot as officers worked in the middle of a shopping area that serves as a local stop for errands, meals and entertainment.
What remains unclear is why the person barricaded themselves in the car and how the incident was resolved. For now, the only facts that hold are the ones visible in Hood’s video and in the police response: a closed-off shopping center, a marked SUV and a warning to stay clear while the situation unfolded.
