Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez are set to voice the leads in Illumination’s Not Alone Movie, and the studio has now put a date on it: April 16, 2027. Universal and Illumination shared the poster on social media on Monday after the announcement emerged from the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The timing matters because Chalamet had already been teasing something new. On Sunday night before the announcement, he posted an Instagram Story with the caption “new movie announcement tmrw:)” over a photo, and the reveal turned out to be his first feature-length animated film. For a star whose recent screen work has centered on live-action roles, the casting makes the project feel like more than another studio slate item; it gives Not Alone an instant draw before a frame has played.
Chalamet will play Joe, an introverted rocket mechanic, while Gomez voices Fran, an astro-botanist building the first-ever plant fueled rocket. The film brings them together as the rocket prepares for its inaugural launch, a setup that also pulls in three aliens — Dunk, Welly and Shirm — who take refuge in Joe’s home while running from officer Zandro. Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan and Jamie Demetriou voice the three aliens, with Brett Goldstein as Zandro and Allison Janney and Lamorne Morris in the supporting cast.
That pairing is the engine of the movie. Joe and Fran have immediate sparks, but neither is especially good at romance, which gives the story a built-in wobble that should matter as much as the alien flight plan. The aliens, meanwhile, believe Fran’s rocket may be their way back home, so the movie has to juggle a grounded relationship story with a race to launch and a chase on its hands.
What comes next is straightforward: Not Alone is in production now, and the date on the poster is the one that counts. If Illumination delivers on the premise, the film will open as a romance, a chase and a homeward trip all at once, with Chalamet and Gomez carrying the center of it when it reaches theaters in April 2027.
