Jennifer Garner marked Father’s Day on Sunday with an Instagram tribute to Ben Affleck that turned into a rare family snapshot. She shared throwback photos of Affleck with Violet, Seraphina and Samuel, then wrote that she sees the way her kids dote on their dad and is happy for them.
One of the photos showed Affleck standing in front of a fence in a dirt field, wearing a striped T-shirt and khaki shorts while Seraphina rode in a carrier on his chest and Violet stood at his side holding his hand. Another showed him in a Batman costume hoisting Samuel onto his shoulder. The images were a public reminder of a family that still appears connected even after the marriage ended years ago.
The timing made the post land with extra weight. Father’s Day is one of the few moments when Garner has a clear reason to post about Affleck publicly, and the photos offered something more personal than a polished tribute: a look at the day-to-day bond between a father and his children. Garner also shared photos of her late father, William John “Bill” Garner, folding her own family history into the message.
That sentiment fits the way Garner has talked about parenting since the split. In a February interview, she said she and Affleck both take on parenting roles in separate households, and in January she said the hard part was not public attention but the breaking up of a family and the loss of a true partnership and friendship. The contradiction is plain in the post itself: the marriage is over, but the family remains active in the way the children move between homes and the parents keep showing up for them.
Garner and Affleck met on the set of Pearl Harbor in 2000, reconnected in 2002 on the set of Daredevil and went public in 2004 after her divorce. They married in 2005, had Violet, Seraphina and Samuel between December 2005 and February 2012, and announced their separation in 2015 before finalizing their divorce three years later. This latest post does not point to a new family milestone. It does something subtler: it confirms that, at least in public, Garner still chooses Father’s Day to show Affleck as the father her children know, and not just the ex-husband she once left behind.
